Our Work

The Smart Mobility Center advances transportation innovation through four strategic pillars. Together they create a framework for sharing knowledge, testing new ideas, and building practical solutions to the mobility challenges facing cities and transportation agencies.

Pillar 01

Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Exchange

Real-world experience is one of the most valuable resources available to transportation professionals. The Smart Mobility Center connects agencies, industry, and researchers directly with their peers through workshops, roundtables, technical forums, and networking events — surfacing practical insights, lessons learned, and proven approaches from other jurisdictions.

Members participate through the P2P Knowledge Exchange Network year-round, and in person at the Annual Summit, our flagship convening.

Peer-Funded Pilot Programs

Innovation requires testing new ideas in real-world environments before broader deployment. Through peer-funded pilots, members pool resources to evaluate technologies and solutions aligned with common transportation objectives — assessing performance, benefits, costs, and implementation considerations before committing to large-scale investment.

How it works

Shared financial risk
Members contribute to a collective fund, making ambitious pilots accessible without large individual budget commitments.
Real-world evidence
Pilots run in live urban environments, generating authentic performance data for procurement, investment, and research decisions.
Cross-sector co-design
Public agencies, private innovators, and academic researchers co-design and co-deliver projects.
Full access to findings
Every contributing member receives complete access to pilot data, findings, and reports.

Pillar 03

Cooperative Research & Communities of Practice

The Smart Mobility Center supports collaborative research that enables jurisdictions to address shared challenges through applied studies, policy development, and joint investigations — bringing together transportation agencies, academic institutions, industry experts, and technology providers.

This work produces the Center’s R&D Research Reports: expert-led, cross-sector research covering topics such as autonomous vehicles, EV infrastructure, Mobility-as-a-Service, public transit innovation, smart city integration, and regulatory frameworks — the evidence base members use for business cases, funding applications, procurement strategies, and policy submissions.

Communities of Practice
The Center also facilitates Communities of Practice: ongoing forums where professionals in specialized areas collaborate, solve problems, and develop common approaches to emerging mobility issues.

Pillar 04

Global Fact-Finding & International Engagement

Transportation innovation is a global endeavour. The Smart Mobility Center runs structured fact-finding missions to leading cities and mobility hubs, and participates in major international events including ITS Canada, ITS America, the ITS World Congress, and ITS Europe (ERTICO) — bringing global lessons home so members avoid common pitfalls and accelerate proven solutions

Every mission follows a three-stage process

Pre-trip planning
Destination selection based on policy relevance, delegate briefings on the local regulatory context, and pre-read materials tailored to each jurisdiction's priorities.
2
On-trip management
Facilitated site visits, structured briefings with local authorities and mobility operators, and live capture of insights.
3
Post-trip analysis & reporting
A co-authored mission report with actionable recommendations, distributed to all members through the knowledge library.
